One of the GTA's major expressway interchanges, this is where the 410 (coming south from Brampton) and the 403 (coming north from downtown Mississauga) meet the 401. The 2nd-tier slipramp (running all the way across the picture) brings Toronto bound traffic off the 401 and on to the 410. Below that ramp and just over the 401 flows the link between the 410 and the 403.

The excellent online resource Ontario Provincial Highways by Christopher J Bessert gives a detailed history of the 410 - and this interchange. Basically, the 403 existed well before the 410, so when this new Brampton-bound highway arrived is obviously had to be joined to the the existing 401/403 interchange. The result makes for an unusual tangle when viewed from the air. At first, the 410 was only linked to the 401 - so it was not possible to drive between the 410 and 403 (i.e. straight ahead!!! since 410 and 403 are in practice just extentions of each other). A pair of ramps over the 401 subsequently brought that crazy situation to an end.

Another telling feature about this picture is that is clearly shows the point where the container-collector system on the 401 Westbound (oncoming) comes to an end. More about that in some of the other pictures ...
